Gates & Channels

Gates and Channels in Human Design: How Your Chart Gets Specific

A gate is one of 64 numbered points on the Human Design chart, each sitting in one of the nine centers and tied to a hexagram of the I Ching. A channel is the line joining two gates in different centers. When both gates are activated, the channel is complete and both centers become defined.

Your type, authority, and profile come from the big shapes on your chart. The gates and channels are the fine print, and they are where two people with the same type stop looking alike. A gate is one of 64 numbered points, each living inside one of the nine centers. A channel is the line that runs between two gates in two different centers. Activate both ends of a channel and it turns solid, the two centers it touches become defined, and you've found one piece of what runs in you all the time.

Everything else on the chart is built from these. Centers get defined by channels. Channels are made of gates. This is the layer under the layer, and it rewards a slow look.

What is a gate in Human Design?

A gate is a single point of potential, one of 64, and each one sits in exactly one of the nine centers. The numbers come straight from the I Ching: gate 34 is hexagram 34, gate 1 is hexagram 1, and so on through all 64. Each gate carries a theme. Gate 34 in the Sacral is about power and independent energy. Up in the Throat, gate 20 is about being present and speaking in the now. Gate 10 in the G center is about self-love and how you carry yourself.

A gate gets activated when one of the 13 bodies in your chart lands in it: the Sun, Earth, Moon, the two lunar nodes, and the eight planets from Mercury to Pluto. Each gate covers 5.625 degrees of the zodiac, so the sky is cut into 64 slices and every body sits in one of them at any given moment. Your chart lists 26 activations in all. Thirteen belong to your conscious Personality (the black column, calculated at the moment of birth) and thirteen to your unconscious Design (the red column, calculated about 88 days before birth).

Each gate is also divided into six lines, and the line your Sun sits in is what gives you your profile. For this article, the gate itself is enough.

What is a channel in Human Design?

A channel is the connection between two specific gates in two different centers. There are 36 of them, and every pairing is fixed. Gate 1 in the G center connects to exactly one place, gate 8 in the Throat, and together they make the 1-8, the Channel of Inspiration. Gate 34 in the Sacral has three possible partners: gate 20 in the Throat, gate 57 in the Spleen, and gate 10 in the G center.

When both gates of a channel are activated, whether in the same column or one in each, the channel is complete. On the chart it shows as a solid colored line, and both centers at its ends fill in. That is what defined means. A complete channel is running that energy consistently, whether or not you are paying attention to it.

What is a hanging gate?

A hanging gate is an activated gate whose partner across the channel is not activated. You carry the theme, but the circuit stays open, and so does the center that gate sits in.

Hanging gates matter for two reasons. First, they shape how you experience an open center. An open Throat with gate 20 hanging in it takes in the room differently than an open Throat with gate 8 hanging in it, even though neither one is defined. Second, they pull. When someone else carries the gate across from your hanging gate, your two charts complete the channel between you, and for as long as you are together, both of you have that definition. Human Design calls this an electromagnetic connection, and it is one of the main reasons certain people feel instantly familiar or instantly charged the first time you meet them.

How do channels create definition and type?

Definition is the pattern of your complete channels. Centers joined by complete channels form a connected group. If every defined center connects into one group, you have single definition. Two separate groups is a split definition, three is a triple split, and four is a quadruple split. A Reflector has no complete channels, so no definition at all.

Type comes from where those channels run. A complete channel into the Sacral makes you a Generator or a Manifesting Generator. A motor center connected to the Throat by complete channels, with the Sacral open, makes a Manifestor. An open Sacral with no motor reaching the Throat, and at least one center defined, makes a Projector. Your type is a reading of your channels.

That means one gate can change everything. Add or remove a single activation and a channel appears or vanishes, a center flips, and the type can change with it. The Moon moves through a gate in roughly ten hours, and even the Sun changes gates every 5.7 days or so. If your birth time is uncertain, the free birth time finder is the place to start, because the gates are exactly what an off time scrambles.

Which gates and channels should you look at first?

Start with the complete channels. Open your chart and find the solid colored lines. Those are the fixed, reliable parts of you, the energy that runs the same on a good day and a bad one. Most people have a handful, and each one is a sentence about how you work.

A few you'll see often:

  • 34-20, Charisma (Sacral to Throat). Gut energy that goes straight into action, the channel behind many Manifesting Generators.
  • 1-8, Inspiration (G to Throat). Creative self-expression that leads by example.
  • 59-6, Intimacy (Sacral to Solar Plexus). The energy of bonding, closeness, and making family.
  • 10-57, Perfected Form (G to Spleen). Instinctive survival through living your own way.

Then look at the hanging gates. They describe what you're drawn into and who you're drawn to, which is a different kind of information and just as useful.

Channels also group into circuits. Individual channels run on their own timing and bring something new. Collective channels are about sharing what's been learned, whether through logic or through experience. Tribal channels are about support, bargains, and the people you belong to. Knowing which circuit a channel belongs to tells you what that energy is for.

Where to go next

If the centers themselves are still new, the nine centers walks through each one, and defined vs undefined centers explains what the filled-in and hollow shapes mean for daily life. To see how gates and channels sit alongside type, authority, and profile, how to read your Human Design chart puts the whole thing in order.

Common questions

What is the difference between a gate and a channel in Human Design?

A gate is a single point of potential, one of 64, and each one sits inside one center. A channel is the connection between two specific gates in two different centers. A gate on its own is half of a connection. A channel is both halves together, and only a complete channel defines centers and gives you fixed, reliable energy.

How many gates and channels are there in Human Design?

There are 64 gates and 36 channels. The 64 gates map to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching and are spread across the nine centers. Each of the 36 channels joins exactly two gates. Most people have a handful of complete channels, and a Reflector has none at all.

What is a hanging gate in Human Design?

A hanging gate is an activated gate whose partner at the other end of the channel is not activated. You carry that gate's theme, but the circuit is open, so the center stays undefined. People with the matching gate complete the channel with you, which is why some people feel instantly magnetic. Human Design calls that an electromagnetic connection.

Does one activated gate define a center?

No. A center becomes defined only when a complete channel runs into it, and that takes both gates of the channel activated. One activated gate leaves the center open. It still colors how you take in that center's theme, but the energy there is not consistent.
