Look at your Human Design chart and you'll see nine geometric shapes, some colored in and some left white. The colored ones are defined centers and the white ones are undefined centers, and that single split explains a surprising amount about why you feel steady in some parts of life and like a weathervane in others.
A defined center is where you have your own consistent energy. An undefined center is where you pick up everyone else's.
What is a defined center in Human Design?
A defined center is a center connected to another center by a complete channel. Every channel has a gate at each end, and when both of those gates are activated in your chart, the channel lights up and the two centers it joins get colored in.
That connection gives the center a fixed, reliable way of working. If your Sacral is defined, you have steady access to life force and work energy. If your Throat is defined, you have a consistent way of speaking and getting things said. Other people feel your defined centers coming off you whether you notice them or not.
Defined centers are also the parts of you that are least affected by the people you're around. They're the home base.
What is an undefined center?
An undefined center is a white center with no complete channel running into it. It has no fixed setting, so it works differently depending on who you're with and what's happening that day.
Here's the part most people find useful: an undefined center takes in and amplifies the energy of whoever has that center defined. Sit next to someone with a defined Solar Plexus and your undefined Solar Plexus will feel their mood, often more intensely than they're feeling it. Spend a week around a driven person with a defined Root and your own undefined Root will start treating their deadlines as your emergencies.
This is why undefined centers are called the place of conditioning. Most of what people call "I've always been like this" turns out to be an open center that absorbed a parent's pressure, a partner's anxiety, or a workplace's urgency, and then got mistaken for personality.
It's also where wisdom lives. A defined center only ever knows its own version of a theme. An undefined center gets to taste all of them. Someone with a white Solar Plexus who stops identifying with every feeling passing through can read a room's emotional weather better than almost anyone.
What's the difference between open and undefined centers?
For most purposes, nothing. People use "open" and "undefined" for any white center.
Some teachers make a finer distinction. An undefined center is white but has one or more hanging gates, single gates activated with no partner on the other end of the channel. Those gates give the center a particular flavor in what it tends to pick up. A completely open center has no activated gates at all, which means it can take in anything and has no built-in theme to it. If you're looking at your chart for the first time, "white means undefined" is all you need.
What do each of the nine centers mean, defined and undefined?
| Center | What it governs | Defined | Undefined, and its not-self question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Head | Inspiration, mental pressure | Consistent kinds of questions and ideas | Takes in others' questions. "Am I trying to answer other people's questions?" |
| Ajna | Thinking, opinions, certainty | A fixed way of processing information | Flexible thinking. "Am I trying to convince everyone that I'm certain?" |
| Throat | Communication, action | A consistent voice | Speech varies with company. "Am I trying to attract attention?" |
| G | Identity, love, direction | A steady sense of self and direction | Identity shifts with place and people. "Am I still looking for love and direction?" |
| Heart (Ego) | Willpower, worth, promises | Reliable willpower | Nothing to prove. "Am I still trying to prove my worth?" |
| Spleen | Intuition, health, timing, fear | A steady immune and intuitive system | Sensitive to wellness in others. "Am I holding on to what isn't good for me?" |
| Solar Plexus | Emotions | An emotional wave you ride over time | Amplifies others' feelings. "Am I avoiding confrontation and truth?" |
| Sacral | Life force, work energy | Sustainable energy for work | Borrowed energy. "Do I know when enough is enough?" |
| Root | Adrenal pressure, drive | A consistent relationship to stress | Amplifies pressure. "Am I in a hurry to get things done so I can be free of the pressure?" |
The not-self questions are the practical tool here. Each one describes the specific way a white center tends to overcompensate when it's identifying with what it absorbs. Asking the question the moment you notice the pattern is often enough to set down energy that was never yours to carry.
The centers also sort into three kinds. The motors (Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Root) supply energy. The awareness centers (Ajna, Spleen, Solar Plexus) give you ways of knowing. The pressure centers (Head and Root) push you to think or to act.
How do defined centers shape your type and authority?
Your type and your inner authority are both calculated straight from which centers are defined.
A defined Sacral makes you a Generator or a Manifesting Generator, the roughly 70% of people built around sustainable work energy. Projectors and Manifestors have an undefined Sacral. A Manifestor has a motor connected to the Throat; a Projector doesn't. Reflectors, about 1% of people, have all nine centers undefined, which is why the Reflector type is described as a mirror.
Authority follows a fixed order. A defined Solar Plexus overrides everything and gives you emotional authority. Without it, a defined Sacral gives sacral authority, then comes the Spleen, then the Heart, then the G center. With none of those defined, decisions come through talking in the right environment, and Reflectors wait out a full lunar cycle.
Can an undefined center become defined?
Not permanently. Your definition is set at birth and stays the same for life.
What does change is how a white center feels day to day. Other people's definition fills it in while you're around them, and the planets moving through the gates activate channels for hours, days, or longer. That temporary definition can feel completely real, which is part of why an undefined center is so easy to mistake for a fixed trait.
Definition is also very sensitive to birth time. The Moon moves through a gate in roughly ten hours, so a birth time off by an hour or two can complete a channel that shouldn't be there, or leave one open that should be colored in. If your time came from memory rather than a certificate, the free birth time finder shows which centers hold steady across your possible birth window and which ones hinge on the hour.
Where to go next
The white centers in your chart are usually where the biggest relief sits. Seeing that the pressure, the moods, or the need to prove yourself came in from outside gives you somewhere to stand that is actually yours.
If you're new to the bodygraph, how to read your chart puts centers back in order after type, strategy, authority, and profile. If you have a lot of white on your chart, the Reflector shows what life looks like with all nine open.
And if you'd like your own centers talked through, which ones are steady, which ones are soaking up the people around you, and how that plays with your type and authority, that's what a personalized YouCast episode does, built from your exact birth data.
